Supposing Hunter-gatherer Variability
نویسنده
چکیده
J B. S. Haldane, the British geneticist, once mused, "my suspicion is that the universe is not only queerer than we suppose ,but queerer than we can suppose" (Haldane 1927:286). This comment can be paraphrased to summarize the fundamental problem presently facing hunter-gatherer studies: there is more variation among recent and especially past hunter-gatherer societies than we have supposed. The central theoretical problem is whether there is and was more variability than our current theories can suppose. These three books represent very different approaches to supposing variability. Hunter-gatherer studies matter. They are at the core of the anthropological and archaeological enterprise (Bettinger 1991), which is explaining the tremendous diversity among human cultures. Hunter-gatherers are, as Bettinger (1991) says, the ultimate testing ground for general anthropological and archaeological theories. Additionally, hunter-gatherer studies are one of the few remaining places where sociocultural anthropology, archaeology, bioanthropology, and even linguisBOOK REVIEW 1-;SSAY

The Transition to agriculture in northwestern China
Agriculture can evolve independently only where intensive hunter-gatherer plant use has previously evolved, and both developments are limited by two major evolutionary constraints: climatic variability and social convention. During the Pleistocene, environmental variability constrained plant productivity and therefore plant-intensive subsistence; but during the Holocene it was the hunter-gather...
متن کاملDoes Lateral Transmission Obscure Inheritance in Hunter-Gatherer Languages?
In recent years, linguists have begun to increasingly rely on quantitative phylogenetic approaches to examine language evolution. Some linguists have questioned the suitability of phylogenetic approaches on the grounds that linguistic evolution is largely reticulate due to extensive lateral transmission, or borrowing, among languages. The problem may be particularly pronounced in hunter-gathere...
متن کاملHunter-Gatherer Olfaction Is Special
People struggle to name odors [1-4]. This has been attributed to a diminution of olfaction in trade-off to vision [5-10]. This presumption has been challenged recently by data from the hunter-gatherer Jahai who, unlike English speakers, find odors as easy to name as colors [4]. Is the superior olfactory performance among the Jahai because of their ecology (tropical rainforest), their language f...
متن کاملThe Socio-ecology of Hunter-Gatherer Territorial Dynamics
This paper contributes to understanding the socioecology of hunter-gatherer territorial dynamics. We develop and evaluate three hypotheses for the effects of corporate territorial ownership and the storage of food on the territory size of hunter-gatherer societies. We seek to initiate a more nuanced understanding of how social and technological organization cause and constrain the size of hunte...
متن کاملHunter-gatherer Studies: the Importance of Context
Anthropological and behavioral ecological studies of living hunter-gatherers have flourished since the 1960’s. Researchers have developed and followed a variety of paradigms, each with its own assumptions and objectives, based on the behavior of huntergatherer communities. I argue here that in order to evaluate the validity of the use of a specific hunter-gatherer group for particular paradigma...
